This blog from The Planetary Society discusses a proposal to send spacecraft to the Martian moons, Phobos and Diemos. Because the moons have so little gravity, they possess a significantly smaller gravitational potential well. That means a LOT less fuel is required to land, or even orbit or flyby them. This could provide us with important information about Mars, at a greatly reduced cost. Also, unlike our Moon, Phobos and Diemos are very small. They look more like rocky russet potatoes than the relatively large, spherical mass that is our Moon. Did you know our Moon is larger than Pluto?
