Laughter REALLY is the Best Medicine
The picture shown here is of me helping a bunch of kids launch their rockets at the San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Somewhere there is video of this, but it has been lost, so I will try to do it justice with the story.
Hundreds of children had dutifully lined up to make a paper rocket, expecting to launch it on one of two launchers the San Diego Space Society had constructed of a bicycle tire pump and PVC. Both of the launchers broke and, rather than disappoint hundreds of children, I grabbed a section of the PVC. I stepped out onto the grassy field behind the San Diego Space Society booth, put the PVC in my mouth, put a paper rocket on the other end, took a deep breath, and BLEW!!.
The rockets went pretty far, and kids started experimenting with nose cones, fins, and different designs to see what effect they had on distance. One girl experimented for a good three hours, and her mom commented that she had learned more science from me that afternoon than she had in her entire school year. It was March when this happened.
I truly wish I knew where that video was, because these pictures just do not do justice to all the fun we had, kids running around, fixing their rockets, me having to go for detanking exercises (bathroom break) and retanking (food and water). These are official NASA terms used in Space Shuttle launches. We just had a blast, and I was really sorry the day was over. I would dearly love to do this again.
