Milky Way mesmerizes Astronomer at ALMA

August 21, 2015 By Sandy Eulitt

I love how the Milky Way makes an arc across the sky. I have never seen that, and I don’t think it is possible in the Northern Hemisphere. ALMA is the Atacama Large Millimeters Array. It rests high in the Andes mountains at an elevation of about 18,000 feet. The air is quite thin there, making observing difficult for people. The trade off is that incredible images and sights are possible because of the reduced atmosphere. Large millimeter refers to the wavelength of light, or electromagnetic radiation, that the images are taken at.  The human eye cannot see at millimeter wavelengths. It sees at nanometer wavelengths, which are 1000 times smaller.
